Modello in scala del motore FIAT 1060 S
1968

209

Description

The 1060 S was the largest and most powerful marine engine built by FIAT Grandi Motori. Designed in the second half of the 1960s, it represents the pinnacle of the technical development of large two-stroke diesel engines carried out by FIAT. The research and development prototype, built with two cylinders in line, was built and bench tested in 1968 in Turin, while the production of complete engines for operational use on large merchant ships was carried out, in small series, in Grandi Motori plant in Trieste, in which, in the early 1970s, FIAT had transferred most of its business in the naval engine sector. None of those engines produced has survived and the scale model on display, built in the late 1960s for promotional activities, accurately represents the twin-cylinder prototype. As far as the technical characteristics of the model on display are concerned, it is a two-stroke diesel naval engine, made by means of modular construction with the possibility of reaching up to 12 cylinders in line (10 cylinders in the unit used on the Sant'Ambrogio super tanker).
