The Museum of Engines and Mechanisms of the University of Palermo collects more than 300 items which narrate the evolution of science and technique in the field of thermal machines and their components. A rigorous chronological path through the various typological groups allows a historical walk along the last 150 years. The Museum exposes a wide collection of machines and mechanisms including steam engines, several aircraft engines of the First and the Second World War, many automotive engines and various hydraulic machines. A very interesting collection of laboratory devices and didactic models dating from the end of 19th century illustrates the evolution of the scientific studies in the field of machines and applied mechanics. The collection was dug up by means of a scrupulous and patient restoring work, which, together with accurate historical researches, gave the proper museum dignity to each element. The Museum’s mission is to make its heritage available for the students and all people interested in the history of machines. To this purpose, the Museum regularly promotes and participates in various cultural events pursuing the development policy promoted by the University.
